Lake a'boil

It's been absurdly nice here in Seattle for the past three weeks, if not longer (I'll have to check the weather blog archives to verify this.) We nearly reached 90 the past two days, and there hasn't been a cloud to be seen in at least seven days. Thankfully, there's also been very little humidity, so it's been nothing short of spectacular (although the cats may beg to differ, but that's what a fur coat will get you.)

Of course, the lake is up to nearly 70 degrees, so the cold water pipe isn't very cold anymore, but that's a small sacrifice to make for such beautiful conditions.

Naturally, it's a great time to do a little hard labor!

Two weekends ago I scrubbed the entire outside of the boat from the water line all the way to the top of the upper helm. There was some serious grit and grime coating the boat, and from the looks of things the poor boat hadn't been cleaned since about 1995. I started at 10 am on Saturday and didn't finish until 8 pm Sunday, at which point my arms were about to fall off. It looks much better now, although there's still a lot of fine detail to be done. It also needs a good buffing and waxing, but I wasn't about to do that by hand, so I got an attachment for my drill and that might be this weekend's adventure.

Meanwhile in the intervening time, I painted the kitchen. For some unapparent reason, the last people to paint the room didn't remove any fixtures, outlet covers, or the like when they painted, so when we did our initial clean-out upon purchasing the boat we discovered all these weird yellow rectangles behind the items, making our nice white walls quite ugly. At the time it wasn't really a pressing issue, what with leaks and new floors and the like, but the temporary shelf I put up on that wall finally gave way and broke last week, so now's the time for a more permanent solution. The wall is now a nice, clean, consistent shade of off-white, and next I'm going to be installing some serious brackets and shelving to store some of the foodstuff that's currently scattered about the countertops.

Of course now that the corner looks so nice and clean, I'm guilting myself into painting the rest of the front room to match. I've got enough paint, so it's just a matter of finding a few nice low humidity days and the fortitude to move everything out of the way and mask the edges. We'll see if that willpower materializes.
